Avoiding Risky Substances
What you choose not to put in your body is medicine too. Risky substances undermine every other pillar of your health — often invisibly, over time.
What Are Risky Substances?
When we speak of risky substances, we mean anything consumed in quantities that harm the body or disrupt its optimal function. This includes:
- Alcohol — even in “moderate” amounts, disrupts sleep architecture, elevates cancer risk, and burdens the liver
- Tobacco and vaping — damage every organ system, including the heart, lungs, gut, and reproductive system
- Recreational drugs — including marijuana in excess, which disrupts sleep, motivation, and cognitive function
- Excess sugar — drives inflammation, insulin resistance, weight gain, and addiction-like cravings
- Excess salt — elevates blood pressure and strains the cardiovascular system
- Excess caffeine — elevates cortisol, disrupts sleep, and can drive anxiety and heart palpitations
Why This Is a Lifestyle Medicine Issue
Substance use is rarely just about the substance. It is almost always a response to an unmet need — for rest, for connection, for stress relief, for pleasure, for coping.
When we address all six pillars of health together, the “need” that drives substance use often diminishes naturally. Better sleep, stronger social connections, managed stress, and a nourishing diet provide what substances were offering — more effectively, and without the damage.
We never shame anyone for their current habits. We teach the truth, and we walk alongside you as you decide what matters most.
Commercial Influence — and the Truth
We live in a culture that actively markets harmful substances. Liquor stores, vape shops, and fast food chains sit on nearly every corner. Television commercials promote medications, sugary beverages, and processed snacks as paths to happiness and health.
Commercial weight-loss programs often rely on heavily processed “diet” food products that are scientifically proven to be less effective than whole foods. Supplement manufacturers profit from products the body often cannot efficiently absorb or use.
Walk Towards Health teaches you to recognize these influences and make choices based on evidence — not marketing.
The Walk Towards Health Approach
Session 6: Harmful Substances
A clear, compassionate, evidence-based session on how specific substances affect the body — and practical strategies for reducing exposure and meeting the underlying needs in healthier ways.
Understanding the Why
We explore why specific substances are appealing and what they are providing — then identify healthier alternatives that fulfill the same biological or emotional need.
No Shame, Only Truth
Our approach is educational, not judgmental. We give you the truth — and trust you to make decisions about your own life with that truth in hand.
How Substance Use Connects to the Other Pillars
- Sleep: Alcohol disrupts REM sleep; caffeine delays sleep onset; both worsen sleep quality even when they seem to help initially
- Nutrition: Excess sugar and alcohol displace nutrient-dense foods and damage gut health
- Stress: Substances often feel like stress relief but actually increase baseline cortisol over time
- Social Connection: Substance use can initially feel social, but addiction increasingly isolates
- Physical Activity: Substances drain energy, impair recovery, and reduce motivation for movement
